When you have several types of machines running in your factory, you will eventually have to change out some of the bolts and screws along with their washers. While flat washers are ideal for simple connections, there are times when you need ones that can handle certain conditions.

If you have machines that require washers that have a special function or shape, you may be uncertain as to which ones you should be using. Below are a couple of types of washers that are often used in a factory setting to deal with some of the special conditions the machines are put under. 

1. Lock Washers Are Designed for Fittings Prone to Rotating or Subjected to Friction

One type of washer that you may need for certain pieces of equipment in your factory is a lock washer. The types of machinery that typically require this type are ones with multiple moving parts.

The bolts or screws that are needed for the moving parts are subjected to friction from movement and are also prone to rotate and loosen. A lock washer not only helps to seal the space between the head and the machine's surface but also keeps the bolt or screw in place while protecting it from friction that can wear it down. 

2. Spring Washers Are Uniquely Designed to Absorb Shock and Maintain Mechanical Tension

Another type of washer you may need to use for some of your industrial equipment is a spring washer. Some of the machines in your factory will vibrate constantly, making the screw or bolt become loose over time. The machine may also need to maintain mechanical tension to keep it operational.

For these cases, the spring washer's beveled design helps to keep tension on the part. This type of washer also helps to absorb the shock from the vibrations that the bolt or screw must endure during its day-to-day operations.

For regular fittings, flat washers serve the purpose of sealing the openings underneath the bolts and screws. However, if the fitting will be subjected to friction or will rotate easily, a lock washer would be a better option. Or, if the fitting will need to maintain tension and absorb shock, a spring washer would be more appropriate.
